Home sweet home is a project that presents a new planning role when building new assisted living facilities.

Currently over 16% of Denmark’s residents are aged 65, or older. Moreover, the sharpest rise in the Danish elderly population will be in those individuals in most critical need of care: citizens above the age of 80. However studies show that very few want to move into an assisted living facility (ALF). With this in mind, I have lived at ALFs respectively in Denmark and U.S; attended conferences in “positive aging”; and engaged in user involvement processes within construction processes. All of this to look at how we can create a better match between physical spaces and how they are used, in practice.

The concept “Home Sweet Home” presents a new planning role, within the construction process. This role works from a dialogue and network-oriented approach,s which aims to create a connection between space, as conceptualized by the municipal government, and the space, as it is lived by the elderly. I call this a network-oriented planner, which is working alongside the construction process ensuring to connect users and local communities on micro-level with municipalities and government on macro-level. The network-oriented planner will contribute with an understanding of health promotion processes, systemic thinking and meditational competencies that will create conditions of possibility for the residents to live their desired everyday life on the basis of physical, mental, and social needs.
