Some say that the world belongs to the best communicators. That might be an overstatement, but there is definitely something about it. But how important is communication actually, and why? We will look further into the importance of communication in the following as well as how you can improve your communication skills and obtain a so-called “Powerful Prescence”.

Human being are social animals. We constantly interact with people and other elements of the society. We share our ideas, thoughts, information and much more.

Communication also plays an integral role in our professional life. Any profession involves communication with various parties such as clients, colleagues, vendors, customers etc.

Communication is more important than ever and one of the most important things about communication, is having other people understanding what you’re saying. Establishing mutual understanding is key when it comes to effective communication.

What is communication?

Communication is an integral part of living. We talk to our family members, our friends, our colleagues, and even strangers. But communication is a lot more than just talking – especially in todays digital world, where a lot of conversations takes place thought different online channels.

Talking simply refers to speaking words and sentences. Sometimes the message is understood, and sometimes it is not. Communication on the other hand, is one step further in the process. It is the sharing of information between two or more people to reach a common understanding. Communication is therefore a two-way process. It needs both a sender and a receiver. The sender’s role is to communicate clearly and correct, while the receiver’s role is to pay attention to the sender. However, quite often the message does not get though. Sometimes it’s because the sender did not communicate clearly enough or because the receiver is more focused on what he or she wants to communication, rather than listening.

To increase the chances of your message being understood by the receiver, there are some basic rules you must follow. First of all, be clear, concise, and concrete. Also, if the communication is not spoken but written, make sure your communication is correct, which means no grammatical errors or spelling errors. Those are some basic guidelines on how to become a better communicator.

Avoid communication barriers

There are many barriers to communication and these may occur at any stage in the communication process. These barriers lead to misunderstandings and ultimately wasted time. Examples of communication barriers are difficult words, unfamiliar language and overcomplicated sentences.

We communicate not just verbally, but also non-verbally though our body language, gestures and facial expressions.

Our emotions also affect our communication and how we interpret what is communicated.

As humans, we tend to filter information based on what we want to hear. Therefore, developing effective communication skills is crucial for any teacher, entrepreneur, leader, consultant, activist, and others who have an urge to express something close to their heart.

Establish a powerful presence

You may have heard the concept of “Powerful Prescence” in relation to communication. But what does it actually mean to have a powerful presence and why is it important?

Individuals who have a powerful presence appear comfortable and confident in the eyes of others. An individual who has a powerful presence usually speaks clearly and influentially – even under pressure or in front of a large audience. They reflect on the situation they are in and then quickly adapt to it.

Having a powerful presence can help you in various ways since it will help you attract the attention of other people. When you learn how to establish a powerful presence, you will be able to gain and maintain the attention of others with ease.

So, how do you develop a powerful presence? Powerful presence is all about knowing yourself, self-awareness, inner wisdom, and being aware of your own emotions. Luckily, it is not something we are born with. It is something that is developed. Therefore, anyone can develop a powerful presence – including you.
