Learning Experience Design,
Academy Established in Ethiopia

Project Challenge:

GIZ faced a significant challenge: they had conducted extensive research on the most effective ways to help Ethiopian farmers adopt sustainable farming practices and improve crop yields. However, this crucial knowledge was buried in dense, digitized textbooks, making it inaccessible to Ethiopia’s 89 million farmers and agricultural workers. To address this, GIZ partnered with ReDI School, which brought in Kaospilot to help establish the Learning Experience Design (LXD) Academy—a program designed to transform this knowledge into engaging, scalable digital learning experiences.

Context:

The core idea was that by training Ethiopia’s brightest technologists and learning experts in Learning Experience Design, they could democratize access to vital agricultural knowledge through interactive digital tools. To lay the foundation for the LXD Academy, Kaospilot led human-centered research, a learning needs assessment, and curriculum design in close collaboration with Ethiopian partners.

Description:

The Learning Experience Design (LXD) Academy is a three-month, full-time training program for young Ethiopian digital professionals. The curriculum covers learning experience design, project management, leadership, and entrepreneurship, preparing participants for employment in Ethiopia’s digital sector. Each student develops a minimum viable product (MVP)—a prototype of a digital learning application—which is showcased at Demo Day at the end of the training.

Outcomes:

  • 83% of graduates secured jobs within a year of completing the program, with many of the remaining students launching their own businesses.
  • 60 MVPs (prototypes of digital learning applications) were created for agricultural training.
  • Employment pathways expanded, with at least 150 graduates expected to be hired immediately after training.
  • A sustainable LXD community was established to drive future innovation in Ethiopia’s digital learning sector.
  • A national movement towards experience-driven learning emerged, as seen in government institutions like EDI (Ethiopian Development Institute) adopting LXD principles in their training programs.
