a new MBA for the Life-sciences in Catalonia
Project Challenge:
The Kaospilot Learning Agency won a global competition to design, advice & collaborate on A new educational model for entrepreneurship to solve real, global, major challenges in the healthcare and medical technologies industries setting up innovative products, services and business models. And, to create a new standard for ‘industry accredited’ MBA for the Life Sciences industry in Catalonia. To design a inter-disciplinary 9 month MBA to identify, invent and implement new LS businesses to be produced locally and create jobs in Catalonia.
Context
In 2010, Spain was still during a recession, and Education & life sciences were deemed by the EU to be the fastest growing industries in the next 20 years. So, Biocat, a semi state & industry financed LS think-tank put out a tender for a new education to combine LS & Ed, to create new Bio-entrepreneurs to grow the industry, recognition and jobs.
Concept / Result
The concept was a 9-month, fulltime MBA with the interdisciplinary teams formed from top PHD-students, leading researchers, entrepreneurs, lab-technicians, great investors and innovative organizations ‘to act as an igniter to make things happen’.
To create indigenous IP, jobs and innovation within the Life Sciences industry, through a combination of Kaospilot team building and creative leadership training, to keep the teams in emergence in pursuit of novelty and break through new products & services. The program teaches participants how to identify new opportunities and develop the advancing technologies that will set the future of medical practice and will positively impact people’s lives.
Change / Outcome:
- 80% of the teams created new business, winning awards and investment.
- Teams, that had the training, respect & rigour to stay together through the deep immersion and challenges of the MBA and long term as a new company.
- All graduates, who didn’t pursue business creation, went on to innovative leadership positions in the LS sector.
