What does it take to be a leader?
You don’t necessarily need to be a designated leader and have a formal title to exercise leadership. In fact, anyone in a group or organization can exercise leadership. Every person has the ability to influence and impact other people in a positive, creative, and productive way. And that is actually what leadership is. Leadership is about drive, engagement and passion – not a title.
Therefore, anyone can become an effective leader. Leaders are not born – they are made through focused effort and developmental processes.
Leadership comes in many shapes and forms
When we talk about leadership we often think about leading others, but there are many ways to be a leader. To make a long story short; leadership comes in all shapes and forms.
Once, leadership was associated with a formal title such as Manager, CEO, or Executive. The title usually came with a set of responsibilities, such as managing the team or organization, solving problems, motivating the team and caring for the health, safety, and welfare of the team.
Group leadership is the new trend
However, lots of organizations today have a different perception of leadership. Leadership is no longer a formal title, designated to one or more individuals. Instead, many organizations are working with so-called leadership groups or teams, where all the members can exercise leadership, rather than just one individual.
One of the main reasons for this new perception of leadership, is that it is very difficult for one single person to navigate in today’s complex and constantly changing world. Therefore, granting everyone in the team or organization the ability to lead is crucial.
Leadership program for leaders of tomorrow
A lot of today’s leadership programs are based on the old perception of leadership. The perception of a leader as an all-knowing individual, who stands and commands and protects his followers. These programs were made for a world that was, not a world that is or is coming.
Instead, we need leadership programs that help develop the leaders of tomorrow. Leaders, who are driven with a desire to disrupt status quo and are able to thrive in a dynamic environment. Leaders, who can lead projects and businesses in the pursuit of making the world a better place. In short, leaders who want to create change.
